The Need
Our world is changing at a pace we’ve never known before. Two-thirds of jobs that today’s youth will enter do not yet exist, and almost all of those jobs will require high levels of understanding in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and design, and math).
Many young people are being left behind, especially those in rural and under-reached communities. Failing to prepare the next generation to be STEAM literate threatens the health of our youth, the economy, and the places we live. Symbiosis was created to provide every learner in BC with personalized STEAM-learning experiences by 2024.
Mission
To increase STEAM Literacy by connecting, growing and unleashing the power of BC’s STEAM Learning Ecosystem.
Vision
Within five years, Symbiosis will be available to every learner in BC

What Are the Benefits?
A Stronger BC:
Inspiring and informal learning experiences improve attitudes toward STEAM fields and careers; increase STEAM knowledge and skills; and result in a higher likelihood of graduation and pursuit of a STEAM career (source: Afterschool Alliance). |
A Coordinated Effort:
The current Symbiosis hubs in Greater Vancouver, Central Interior and South Vancouver Island share resources and programs, and coordinate and collaborate on services and outreach. |
More Resources to Under-Reached Areas:
A third of all K-12 BC students attend schools outside major city centres. The 3 regional hubs of Symbiosis (by 2024 there will be 9) identify, support and amplify existing, relevant and sustainable STEAM activities and programs, meeting young people where they live. |
